Luxury Unveiled: Chengdu's Shuangliu Datong Shiji Hotel Awaits
Luxury Unveiled: Chengdu's Shuangliu Datong Shiji Hotel – A Rambling, Honest Review (Spoiler Alert: It's Mostly Awesome!)
Alright, buckle up, buttercups. I just got back from the Shuangliu Datong Shiji Hotel in Chengdu, and I'm still unpacking… both literally and figuratively. This place isn't just a hotel; it's a vibe. And after slogging through the endless hotel reviews online, I’m here to give you the real deal, messy opinions and all. Get ready for a stream-of-consciousness journey, because that's how this trip felt!
First things first: Accessibility. This is HUGE for me. I'm not in a wheelchair, thank goodness, but I'm always thinking about folks who are. The good news? The hotel is generally good. Elevators? Check. Ramps where needed? Check. I didn't get a hardcore accessibility tour, but from what I saw, they've put in the effort. Facilities for disabled guests are listed as present, so I'd recommend reaching out directly to confirm specific needs.
On-site accessible restaurants/lounges? Hmmm. I didn’t spot any glaring accessibility issues, but I definitely didn't survey every single inch. More on the food later, but let’s just say, the food… the food was a whole experience.
Internet? (Or, the Wi-Fi Saga)
Okay, so this is important. They boast Free Wi-Fi in all rooms! Internet, Internet [LAN], Internet services, Wi-Fi in public areas. And… it mostly worked. Mostly. Let's be honest, the Wi-Fi in the far corner of my room was a… let's say, "challenged." I mean, in 2024, am I still wrestling with buffering? Argh. I ended up mostly relying on my phone's hotspot for serious work. So, while technically they've got the goods, your mileage may vary. Wi-Fi for special events is also listed; hope they've got some serious bandwidth for those!
Things to Do & Ways to Relax – The Spa Dilemma
This is where things get interesting. They REALLY push the relaxation angle. Body scrub, Body wrap, Fitness center, Foot bath, Gym/fitness, Massage, Pool with view, Sauna, Spa, Spa/sauna, Steamroom, Swimming pool, Swimming pool [outdoor]… Basically, if you can't relax here, you might be a robot.
I, of course, dove headfirst into the relaxation mission. The Pool with view was… stunning. Seriously, a proper Instagram moment. Crystal-clear water, a cityscape stretching out before me, and a cocktail in hand. Pure. Bliss. (Until a kid splashed me. But hey, it adds character, right?). The sauna and steamroom were perfect for sweating out the jet lag. The massage? Chef's kiss. One of the best I've ever had. They worked out knots I didn't even know I had. Though the masseuse did seem a little taken aback by my… let's call it, "enthusiastic" snoring. Oops.
Cleanliness and Safety – Pandemic-Era Essentials (and a few minor hiccups)
Let's talk about the elephant in the room, COVID. They are SERIOUS about hygiene. This is good. They have Anti-viral cleaning products, Daily disinfection in common areas, Hand sanitizer everywhere you look, Hygiene certification, Individually-wrapped food options, Physical distancing of at least 1 meter, Professional-grade sanitizing services, Room sanitization opt-out available, Rooms sanitized between stays, Safe dining setup, Sanitized kitchen and tableware items, Staff trained in safety protocol, Sterilizing equipment. I felt very safe. Now, I did notice one morning the Staff trained in safety protocol didn't quite extend to the gentleman not wearing a mask in the elevator. But it's a small detail, that got fixed quickly.
Dining, Drinking, and Snacking – Food, Glorious Food (and a few surprises!)
Okay, this is the category that truly shone. The Asian cuisine in restaurant, Western cuisine in restaurant, Breakfast [buffet], Breakfast service, Buffet in restaurant, Coffee/tea in restaurant, Coffee shop, Desserts in restaurant, Happy hour, International cuisine in restaurant, Poolside bar, Restaurants, Room service [24-hour], Snack bar. You name it, they probably have it.
The breakfast buffet was LEGENDARY. I mean, seriously, the spread was INSANE. A dazzling array of Asian and Western options, fresh fruit, pastries, and… wait for it… a dosa station. (Which, let me tell you, was a game-changer). I also loved the Coffee/tea in restaurant - a perfect fuel for the day.
One morning, I woke up with a hankering for something different and ordered Breakfast in room - a full Western breakfast. That service was prompt, accurate and delicious. The A la carte in restaurant was really great as well. The Restaurant was all very pleasing to the eyes. I also tried the Salad in restaurant, Soup in restaurant.
The Poolside bar was the perfect escape for an evening cocktail (or two). The cocktails were expertly crafted—some of the best I've had in China.
Services and Conveniences – The Little Things That Make a Difference
They really go the extra mile here. Air conditioning in public area, Audio-visual equipment for special events, Business facilities, Cash withdrawal, Concierge, Contactless check-in/out, Convenience store, Currency exchange, Daily housekeeping, Doorman, Dry cleaning, Elevator, Essential condiments, Food delivery, Gift/souvenir shop, Indoor venue for special events, Ironing service, Laundry service, Luggage storage, Meeting/banquet facilities. The concierge was an absolute lifesaver, helping me navigate the city and even booking a last-minute taxi. The Daily housekeeping kept the room spotless, and the laundry service was quick and efficient.
For the Kids – Not My Area of Expertise (But They Seemed to Love It!)
They've got Babysitting service, Family/child friendly, Kids facilities, Kids meal. I’m not a parent. I have no kids, so I can't personally vouch for the kid-friendly aspect, but I saw plenty of happy little faces running around, so… draw your own conclusions!
Available in All Rooms – The Nitty-Gritty
Air conditioning, Alarm clock, Bathrobes, Bathtub, Blackout curtains, Carpeting, Closet, Coffee/tea maker, Complimentary tea, Daily housekeeping, Desk, Extra long bed, Free bottled water, Hair dryer, High floor, In-room safe box, Interconnecting room(s) available, Internet access – LAN, Internet access – wireless, Ironing facilities, Laptop workspace, Linens, Mini bar, Mirror, Non-smoking, On-demand movies, Private bathroom, Reading light, Refrigerator, Safety/security feature, Satellite/cable channels, Scale, Seating area, Separate shower/bathtub, Shower, Slippers, Smoke detector, Socket near the bed, Sofa, Soundproofing, Telephone, Toiletries, Towels, Umbrella, Visual alarm, Wake-up service, Wi-Fi [free], Window that opens.
My room was a haven. The bed was ridiculously comfortable, the blackout curtains were perfect for sleeping in, and the refrigerator, stocked with cold water (essential in Chengdu heat!), was a lifesaver. Oh, and the bathrobes? Plush perfection. They also had an in-room safe box.
Getting Around – Location, Location, Location (and a Free Car Park!)
Airport transfer, Bicycle parking, Car park [free of charge], Car park [on-site], Car power charging station, Taxi service, Valet parking. The hotel offered an Airport transfer, which was a godsend after a long flight. The location was convenient, with easy access to local transportation (though I mostly relied on taxis). The car park [free of charge] is also excellent.
The Quirks and Imperfections
Look, no place is perfect. There were a few minor hiccups. Like… the elevator system was bit slow on the busy hours. And, as I mentioned, the Wi-Fi wasn't always stellar.
My Verdict: Worth It? Absolutely. (But…)
Would I go back? In a heartbeat. The overall experience was top-notch. The service was impeccable, the food was divine, and the relaxation opportunities were endless.
The "But" part? It's not cheap. This is a luxury hotel. So, if your budget is tight, you might need to look elsewhere. BUT, if you're looking for a treat-yourself getaway, or a special occasion celebration, the Shuangliu Datong Shiji Hotel is definitely worth the splurge.

Okay, buckle up, buttercups, because this Chengdu itinerary… well, let's just say it's less "precision-engineered travel experience" and more "hope-we-survive-and-get-fed adventure." We're in Chengdu, people! Panda land! Spicy food central! And our base of operations? The Shuangliu Datong Shiji Hotel. Wish us luck.
Day 1: Arrival and the Great Sichuan Chilli-Thrill
Morning (A Messy Start): Landed in Chengdu! The airport was a blur of smiling faces and people effortlessly gliding through customs while I fumbled with my passport and looked like a lost panda cub myself. The airport taxi queue? Oh, the chaos. Halfway there, the driver just stopped, looked at me, and started pointing at a picture of a panda on his phone. I think he was making conversation, I think he was hungry, I think he was lost. Eventually, we got to the hotel.
Afternoon (Hotel Check-In and a Mild Panic): The Datong Shiji Hotel. Let's be honest, it's…clean. It has air conditioning. The staff are friendly enough, but my Mandarin is about as good as that of a particularly confused houseplant. Checked into my room. It was, surprisingly, clean. The bathroom, however, has a shower drain that looks suspiciously like it might swallow you whole. I'm not sure why, but I spent a good ten minutes scrutinizing the drain, convinced I was about to be sucked into the plumbing system. It’s a real fear, ok?
Evening (Spicy, Oh So Spicy): The REAL reason we're here. Sichuan cuisine! After a quick "rest" (read: scrolling through TikTok in a mild state of panic), we ventured out. Found a little hole-in-the-wall restaurant based purely on the sheer number of locals crammed inside. Ordered some Mapo Tofu. Oh. My. God. The fiery heat! The numbing peppercorns! My mouth was on fire. Tears streamed down my face. But you know what? It was amazing. I ate the whole plate. Every. Single. Bite. Then, I promptly ordered more. And then I needed a milky beverage to cool my tongue. This spicy experience was the highlight of the first day!
Day 2: Pandas, Temples, and the Quest for Toilet Paper
Morning (Pandas and Pure Joy): The Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding! Okay, this was everything. Those fluffy, adorable, bamboo-munching giants! I could have spent all day just watching them waddle around and eat. I had pre-trip anxiety about the crowds, but it wasn't too bad, and the sheer cuteness factor made it all worthwhile. I took approximately 872 pictures of pandas, all of which look exactly the same, but I don't care. Pure, unadulterated panda bliss.
Afternoon (Wuhou Temple & Lost in Translation): A visit to Wuhou Temple (dedicated to the Three Kingdoms period!). The architecture was stunning, the air smelled of incense, and I tried to look cultured whilst also being slightly confused by the history. I listened to a tour guide speak in Mandarin whose speech I could understand a little of but also kept losing my ability to concentrate, which means I probably missed half of the historical significance, but hey, you can't win them all. I bought a calligraphy souvenir from a stoic-looking woman who probably thought I was a total buffoon.
Evening (Dinner and the Great Toilet Paper Shortage): Dinner was a disaster. I somehow managed to order a dish that was entirely made of some kind of organ, I am still not totally sure what it was for the sake of my mental wellbeing! It was an utter failure and I had to eat everything without expressing my feelings to not offend the hosts. Afterwards, I wanted to take a dump. Oh, the hotel toilet paper. I'm not sure if it was the ultra-thin, slightly scratchy, almost transparent stuff, or just my general anxiety, but I was convinced I was going to run out. I may or may not have started hoarding the extra rolls I found in the room, like a squirrel preparing for the apocalypse.
Day 3: Tea, Theatre and a Bit More Chaos
Morning (Tea Houses and the Art Of Zen…ish): A trip to a traditional tea house. I expected an experience that was profoundly calm. Instead, it was a cacophony of clinking cups, loud conversations, and people practicing calligraphy. I tried to channel the Zen-ness of the situation, but mostly I just felt awkward sipping my tea and trying not to spill anything on my khaki shorts. The tea, though, was unbelievably good. A bitter, flowery taste that actually calmed me for a moment.
Afternoon (Sichuan Opera & Face Changing Magic): Sichuan Opera! The costumes, the music, the face-changing! It was genuinely mesmerizing. I could not figure out how these performers quickly swapped their masks without revealing a hint of the trickery. It's such a fun and unique art form.
Evening (Packing Panic and Goodbye Chengdu): The last night in Chengdu! Packing is my least favorite travel activity. I can’t find half of my socks. I probably overpacked. Somehow, I managed to end up with more souvenirs than I started with. After putting all my belongings into my bags, I went to say a final goodbye to the panda outside of the hotel.
Day 4: Departure (or, Did I Leave Anything Behind?)
- Departure (A bittersweet goodbye and a vow return): Early morning checkout. Trying to remember where I left my passport, wallet, and sanity. The hotel staff were incredibly nice as I stammered my way through the check-out process. Headed to the airport. Said a final farewell to Chengdu. I had planned to do everything, but I didn't. I got lost in the food, overspent on souvenirs, and spent way too much time worrying about toilet paper. But honestly? It was the most incredible, messy, and wonderful trip. Chengdu, I love you. I'll be back. And next time, I'm bringing an extra roll of toilet paper.
